De Havilland Champions

On Thursday 24th March, 2016, the Hatfield Primary Schools’ football season drew to a close with the Maynard Cup Final, which took place between De Havilland and Green Lanes School. Now in its 41st year, the Maynard Cup usually produces tense, competitive finals and this year was no exception.

Despite De Havilland taking an early lead through a teasing Max Banham shot, Green Lanes fought hard to get a foothold in the game. The possession was fairly even throughout the first half although a Josh Hart thunderbolt smashed against the Green Lanes crossbar after ten minutes.

Into the second half where both teams battled hard until, with five minutes remaining, a long range Max Banham effort looped into the Green Lanes net. In the dying seconds of the game, a sweeping move led to Banham sealing the victory for De Havilland with his hat-trick goal, saving his best for last.

Both teams deserved credit for a match played very competitively but fairly and congratulations to De Havilland School for having completed the tournament, league and cup treble this season, a very rare and distinguished achievement.
